I think that it is very interesting that girls are seen as minorities in the math and sciences since our entire math department is women and all but 2 of our science is also women. I read <a href=”http://www.downes.ca/cgi-bin/page.cgi?post=42303 ”>this site that spoke about a girl not being able to get a loan because she was a female. She wanted to go to school to be an engineer and they went by the “research” that lead them to the decision not to give her a loan because of her gender.
As a female I don’t feel that “anything males can do, I can do better” but I do believe anything I want to do I can do. That it shouldn’t be based on what other females or males have accomplished. Looking at data from the Male vs Female in math and science it used to be more male dominated, but now in the 2000’s females are dominating the science and math teaching position in my area. I didn’t do an official count but between the two high schools in our county, 7 out of 10 science teachers are females. Looks to me like females are dominating. I would like to know if you all have an unofficial count of male to females in your science department. Just interested! (PS… math is a 8 out of 11 ratio)

I am both Math and Science certified so that shoots somebody’s ratio a little off skew. At the school where I work there is only 1 male Math teacher out of 8, and he is near retirement, and there are only 2 male Science teachers out of 8 neither yet tenured.
