small or large schools

I was reading Stephen Downes’ Blog, “Schools Should be Small“, and he made a great point;  A small school isn’t right for all students.  It talks about how he went to a small school and hated it so he lied about his address to go to a different, bigger school.  He also said that students should be able to choose the way the learn best.  Some students are self motivated and can learn online or when being home schooled, but others need the social environment of a large school.   When I was a kid I went to both large schools and small schools and I learned just as well at both so it didn’t matter to me which school I went to, but Mr. Downes went out of his way to get to a large school.  To each his own and everyone is different in their needs and with the options and technology available today, we can and should allow students to learn in the way they learn best.  I agree.

I am a fan of small schools myself. My boys ended up going to a large consolidated high school. There was a time when we were considering moving to an area in which the school was much smaller. In retrospect, I think it would have been better. It’s interesting, they both chose to go to colleges that were smaller than their high school.
